EHPAD nursing home costs in France

EHPAD (Établissement d'Hébergement pour Personnes Âgées Dépendantes) are France's licensed long-term nursing homes for dependent seniors. Average monthly cost is around €2,100, with prices ranging from €1,500/month in rural areas to €4,500/month in Paris.

3-tier pricing structure

  • 1. Accommodation tier (€1,500-€4,500/month) — Room, meals, laundry, animation. Paid by the resident (unless ASH support).
  • 2. Dependency tier (€100-€800/month) — Daily living assistance based on GIR rating. Covered by the APA benefit paid directly to the EHPAD + a co-payment from the resident.
  • 3. Care tier (€0 for resident) — Medical care, nursing, medications. Fully covered by French Health Insurance.

ASH — Social Housing Aid

When resident's income (and family contribution) cannot cover the accommodation tier, the Conseil départemental can pay the gap through the ASH programme.

  • Resident contributes 90% of their income
  • Minimum €117/month guaranteed for personal expenses
  • Family members (children, sons/daughters-in-law) may be required to contribute (obligation alimentaire)
  • Recovery on inheritance: ASH benefits are reclaimed from the estate after death (above €39,000 net asset)
  • EHPAD must be officially accredited for ASH

25% tax reduction

Residents can claim a 25% reduction on accommodation expenses, capped at €10,000/year (max €2,500 tax savings). Declared in box 7CD of form 2042 RICI. Available regardless of ASH receipt.
